Richard Allen "Coach Porter" Porter Sr., 67, of Cedar Rapids, died Saturday, April 18, 2015, at his home. Services: 1 p.m. Thursday, April 23, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids. Family will greet friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, April 22, at the funeral home. Burial: Linwood Mausoleum, Cedar Rapids.
Survivors include his wife, Nancy Porter of Cedar Rapids; mother, Mary Porter of Cedar Rapids; children, Sara (Richard) Porter Land and Richard "Buddy" (Mark) Porter Jr., all of Cedar Rapids; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; six brothers, Harold "Sonny" (Shirley) Porter of Colorado, Gary (Kelly) Porter of Cedar Rapids, Mike (Shelly) Porter of Colorado, Mitch (Mary) Porter, Jim (Jennifer) Porter and David "Buck" (Sonia) Warren, all of Cedar Rapids; and two sisters, Ruth (Larry) Van Deusen and Beverly (Mike) Gutierrez of Cedar Rapids.
He was preceded in death by his father and niece, Emily.
Richard was born on Feb. 19, 1948, in Iowa City, Iowa, the son of Harold and Mary (Franks) Porter Sr. He graduated from Prairie High School and attended Kirkwood College. Richard served in the United States Army from 1966 to 1973 during the Vietnam War. On Aug, 2, 1967, he married Nancy Meyer in Fort Knox, Ky. He worked for the city as a signal technician. Richard coached all sports for 25 years.
