He resided primarily in southern California in the 1960s and 1970s where he studied plumbing design at Valley College and UCLA and worked as a design engineer at several major firms. After nearly 15 years of dedicated service to the Cedar Rapids Transit Department, he retired in 1998. He relocated to Florida shortly thereafter, where he remained healthy and active until being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in May 2013.
