Dorothy S. Balvanz, 85, of Cedar Rapids, died Friday, Nov. 6, 2015, at The Woodlands at Methwick. Services: 10 a.m. Tuesday at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church by Pastor Randy Kasch. Burial: Czech National Cemetery. Friends may visit with the family Monday from 4 to 8 p.m. at Teahen Funeral Home and Tuesday after 9 a.m. at the church.
Dorothy is survived by four sons, David (Kathy) of Marion, Timothy (Jane) of Morse, Daniel (fiancee Natalie Everts) of Watertown, Wis., and James (Jodi) of Cedar Rapids; 13 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl; and two sisters, LaVerne (Charles) Schneider and Carol (Ken) Olson.
Dorothy Susan was born on April 29, 1930, in Enderlin, N.D., the daughter of the Rev. T.K. and Caroline (Utke) Herbener. She married Carl Herman Balvanz on Dec. 27, 1949, in Oconomowoc, Wis. She attended Wartburg College and worked for Iowa Electric as an administrative assistant, retiring in 1986.
Dorothy was an avid reader and loved to paint a variety of pieces to share with her friends and family. She had a great sense of humor and enjoyed entertaining her family by playing the piano and the banjo. She and Carl loved to travel, fish and golf with their friends. Dorothy made prayer shawls for Gloria Dei Lutheran Church and played the organ during services there for many years.
