George M. Kremenak, 95, an eight-year resident of the Iowa Veterans Home, Marshalltown, Iowa, passed away quietly in his sleep on Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2019, due to complications of old age. Burial at St. John's Cemetery will be at a later date. Stewart Baxter Funeral & Memorial Services is serving the family.

He was born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, on Oct. 7, 1923, to his parents, Vaclav and Marie (Bizinger) Kremenak. He attended St. Patrick's school, graduating in 1942. Upon the start of World War II, George was in the U.S. Army, European Theater, as an infantry machine gunner. He participated in the Battle of the Bulge in Germany. He was combat wounded and received the Purple Heart and other military awards. He was honorably discharged in January 1946, and returned home to Cedar Rapids to live at home and take care of his parents. George never married and was the youngest of five sisters and three brothers. He worked as a letter carrier for the Cedar Rapids post office, retiring after 35 years.

George enjoyed his home, gardening, ceramics, antiques and playing music on his Hammond B-3 electric organ. He was a lifelong member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, the National Association of Letter Carriers, American Legion, VFW and the Military Order of the Purple Heart Chapter 777.

He was preceded in death by his parents; five sisters; and three brothers. He is survived by several nieces and nephews, including special niece, Paulette Goedken, and special nephew and legal guardian, Paul L. Pickart.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be directed to St. Patrick's Catholic Church or the charity of their choice.
