Jason Dirk Van Zee, 35, of Springville, Iowa, passed away Tuesday, May 6, 2014, in Cedar Rapids at his home. Memorial services will be Tuesday, May 13, at 1 p.m. at the Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories. Visitation will be held Monday, May 12, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home. A private family inurnment will follow the service in Prairie City,
Iowa.
Jason was born on Feb. 14, 1979, in Des Moines, Iowa, the son of Kermit Van Zee and Denise DeKoning. He graduated from PCM High School with the class of 1997. Furthering his education, Jason attended the University of Northern
Iowa and received a bachelor's degree in religion and a master's degree from Arkansas Tech University in college administration. He married Kari Krempges on June 17, 2000, in Independence, Iowa. Jason worked at Goodwill of the Heartland as a supportive community living specialist.
He loved reading, going to tulip festivals, aquariums, pastries from Jaarsma Bakery and especially loved his family. Jason was an avid sports fan. He enjoyed watching the Philadelphia Flyers, Cedar Rapids RoughRiders and Pittsburgh Steelers. Jason was also a very faithful Chicago Cubs fan. Jason was the vice president of the Eastern Iowa Aquarium Associations. His favorite pet companions were his cat, Soran, and a dog, Sammy.
Jason was caring, intelligent,
honorable and loving. Jason was a wonderful son, husband, brother, uncle, nephew and friend who will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
He is survived by his wife, Kari Van Zee of Springville; father, Kermit (Mary) Van Zee of Grinnell; his mother- and
father in-law, Richard and Nancy Krempges of Independence; two brothers, Kermit (Tracy) Van Zee II of Payton, Colo., and Govert Van Zee of Prairie City; a sister, Tammy (Chad) Benter of Hazleton; stepsister, Samantha Graham of Grinnell; grandfather, Meredith (Terri) Van Zee of Prairie City; sister-in-law, Melissa (Mike) Henschel of De Witt; special friend, Dee Dykstra of Prairie City; and many loving nieces, nephews and friends.
He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Beverly Van Zee.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be to the family.
