Howard "Van" M. Van Note, 87, of Waterloo, formerly of Vinton and Chicago, passed away Monday, April 25, 2016, after a very lengthy illness of PSP (progressive supranuclear palsy). A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, April 29, at Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories. Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home. Burial will be at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery following the funeral.
Howard "Van" was born Nov. 8, 1928, to Laurence and Esther (Eaton) Van Note, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He had extensive involvement in the auto repair business owning businesses in Kremling, Colo.; Niles, Ill.; and Vinton. He retired from Hawkeye Community College in 1993 as a master ASE technician.
He lived life to the fullest as an airplane pilot, stock car driver and sky diver. He loved to travel and spend time with family and friends. He married Catherine Hahn in 1956. They later divorced. He met his soul mate in 1990 and they married in 1995.
He will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
Van is survived by his wife, Janet; daughters, Kim Van Note of Minneapolis, Minn., Lois (Al) Preston of Algonquin, Ill., Vicki (Pat) Hough of Norway, Iowa, Bethany Climer of Ocala, Fla., Brenda Flint of Cedar Rapids, Carole (Wesley) Rick of Vinton, Ruth Van Note of Crystal River, Fla., and Nancy Ludvigsen of North Lake, Ill.; stepsons, Lane (Erin) McCumsey of Williston, N.D., and Scott (Cori) McCumsey of Grand Rapids, Minn.; a sister, Carolyn Van Note of Darlington, Wis.; as well as 25 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.
Van was preceded in death by his parents; two sons, Michael Van Note and Dennis Ludvigsen; brother, Ronald; and sister-in-law, Dorothy.
