Neil Allen Schulte, 59,
of Fairfax, died Tuesday, May 12, 2015, at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House following a short battle with lung cancer. Services: 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. John XXIII Catholic Church by the Rev. Dustin Vu. Burial: Hala Cemetery. A vigil service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Teahen Funeral Home in Cedar Rapids where friends may visit with the family until 6 p.m. Friends may also visit with the family after 9:30 a.m. Monday at the church.
Neil is survived by his wife, Christine, and children, Adam, Ashley, Nicole, Trenton and Sarah, all of Fairfax; grandson, Gabriel Allen Schulte; father, Richard Schulte of Cedar Rapids; brothers, Rick (Ann) Schulte of Amana, Jeff Schulte of Swisher, Phil (Char) Schulte of Cedar Rapids, Kurt (Marie) Schulte of Fairfax and Greg (Beth) Schulte of West Des Moines; 13 nieces; and 10 nephews.
He was preceded in death by his mother, LeAnna Schulte; paternal grandmother, Helen Schulte; and maternal grandmother, Martha McArtor.
Neil was born on July 13, 1955, in Cedar Rapids, the son of Richard and LeAnna McArtor Schulte. He graduated from Prairie High School in 1973 and electrical trade school. Neil married Christine Ann Banes on Jan. 6, 1979, at St. Jude Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids. Neil worked as an electrician for 30 years at Acme Electric and previously at Rapids Vending Co. in Cedar Rapids.
Neil was a former member of the Walford City Council, organized the building of the Walford baseball and softball diamond complex, a member of the Knights of Columbus, volunteered at the St. Jude Sweet Corn Festival and was a member of Local 405. Neil also enjoyed fishing, hunting, coaching his kids in baseball and softball, and cooking.
