Barbara Ann Schmidt, 51, of North Liberty, died unexpectedly June 5, 2018.

Services are 10 a.m. Saturday, June 9, St. Michael's Catholic Church, Norway, with Bishop Tom Zinkula officiating. Burial: St. Michael's Cemetery. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at the church.

Barb was born June 20, 1966, in Norway, Iowa, the daughter of Loretta Volz Schmidt and Clarence Schmidt. She graduated from Norway High School in 1984 and later from Mount Mercy College with a degree in nursing.

Survivors include her sister, Janice (David) Schulte of Norway; brothers, Dennis (Debbi) of Wichita Falls, Texas, and David of Amana; nieces: Karen (Tom) Daubs, Cindy (Marcus) Quaas and Tami Schulte, Jodi Schmidt, Bret (Ashley) Schmidt and Ki Schmidt; and great-nieces and nephew, Olivia and Savannah Daubs, Ethan Boston, Morgan and Lauren Quaas and Kamdyn Hahn.

Barb was preceded in death by her parents; grandparents, Frank and Kathryn Volz and William and Mary Schmidt; and her great-nephew, Collin Boston.

"Great Aunt Barbie" was just that, great. First to her nieces and nephews, as she was close in age with them, and later to their children, her great nephew and nieces, who all adored and cherished their time with her dearly. At family gatherings, Barb could be found running around with the little ones endlessly, showing sincere interest and enthusiasm in all they did together. Barb loved watching her siblings' children and grandchildren participate in sports and activities for nearly 40 years and made many friends in the stands along the way.

Barb knew early on she wanted to be a nurse and followed her sister's footsteps into the medical field. She thrived in her career as a registered nurse at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, where her love and care for her patients was evident for more than 25 years. She was awarded the Daisy Award for her extraordinary skill and compassionate care. She made many dear friends in her time there and always spoke fondly of the kind people she was surrounded by each workday at the hospital.

Barb was an enthusiastic supporter of the Iowa Hawkeyes, in particular the men's basketball team. For years she enjoyed cheering the teams on alongside her mother. Barb was impressively well-versed on the players, coaches and recruits and loved to talk Iowa athletics any chance she got.

A near lifelong member of St. Michael's Catholic Church, Barb had only recently joined St. Ludmilla's Parish in Cedar Rapids. She was looking forward to spending this coming weekend preparing kolaches for the annual festival.

Barb was considered an immediate member of Jan's family and was like a sister to Karen, Cindy and Tami. The entire family is heartbroken over her passing and will miss her tremendously.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be directed to the University of Iowa Stead Family Children's Hospital.
