Alvin Cooks, 76, of Cedar Rapids, died Wednesday, Feb. 28, 2018, at Mercy Medical Center. Services: 1 p.m. Saturday at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories. Burial: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends may call at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday.
Survivors include his wife, Cora; two sons, Ben (Debra) Dixon and Robert Jenkins, both of Cedar Rapids; a brother, Harrison; and two sisters, Emma and Hazel. He also is survived by four grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and his good friend, Rick Gail. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Jimmy, George, Jessie and Joe; three sisters, Dorothy, Thelma and Annie; and a grandson, T.J. Dixon.
Alvin was born May 5, 1941, in Jackson, Miss., the son of Charlie and Mary Ford Cooks. He married Cora L. Dixon on Aug. 16, 1968, in Belzoni, Miss. Alvin drove a cement truck for Kings Concrete for many years, retiring in 2000.
He was a lifetime member of the Teamsters. Alvin was an avid fisherman and enjoyed going to the races (NASCAR and the Indianapolis 500), cooking, going to the casino, but most of all playing with his grandchildren. His greatest joy was the time spent with his beloved family and many friends. His memory will be cherished by all who knew and loved him.
