Merle Gene Porter, 89, of Marion, died Friday, March 3, 2017, at Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy in Hiawatha. Graveside service with military honors: 1 p.m. Friday, March 10, at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
Merle was born May 4, 1927, the son of James and Anna (Kvach) Porter, in Cedar Rapids. He was married to Marie Teresa Brennen, who passed away in 1995. Merle worked as a technician for Rockwell Collins.
Some of his hobbies included fishing and model airplanes. He greatly enjoyed wildlife and would rush home to make sure they were all fed.
Survivors include his niece, Carmen (Rick) Jergenson; two great-nieces, Lori (Jeff) Thomas and Shelly (Jacob) Harmon; stepson, Kevin Ryan; stepdaughter, Jennifer Ryan; as well as many other family members.
He was preceded in death by his wife; parents; four siblings; and stepson, John Ryan.
