Flitsch, Mary Jo Hockaday

Mary Jo Hockaday Flitsch, 65, Davenport, died Friday, July 23, 2010 at Clarrisa C. Cook Hospice House, Bettendorf, following a brief battle with cancer.

Funeral services and a Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church, 4105 N. Division St., Davenport. Honoring her wish, cremation rites will be accorded after the funeral mass. Inurnment will take place at a later date. Visitation will be Monday at the Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home from 4 to 7 p.m. There will be a prayer service to begin the visitation at 4 p.m. Additional visitation will be Tuesday at the church before the mass from 10 a.m. until the service time at 11 a.m.

Mary Jo Hockaday was born November 20, 1944 in Dubuque, Iowa, a daughter of Harold Bishop and Mary Margaret (Brown) Hockaday. She was united in marriage to Marc Flitsch in 1968 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Jo enjoyed traveling in the car with Marc visiting many states over the years, most recently to visit Marc's mother in Arizona. She enjoyed quilting, crocheting, card games and puzzles, but her greatest joy in life were family gatherings. She cherished time spent with her family, especially her grandchildren, Austin and Jaci Jo.

Mary Jo was a 56-year survivor of the polio epidemic. She was an active member of Our Lady of Victory and taught her whole family the importance of prayer. She inspired her family and friends to always look on the bright side of things. She always had a smile and made others feel welcome. She will be missed beyond words.

Memorials can be made to either Clarrisa C. Cook Hospice House or Our Lady of Victory Church.

Survivors include her beloved husband of 41 years, Marc; their daughter, Anna Flitsch Adams, Davenport; her two grandchildren, Austin and Jaci Jo, Davenport; her dad, Harold Hockaday, Nashua, N.H.; two sisters, Ruth (Dave) Wazac, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Corinne (Jeff) Lyons, Hiawatha, Iowa; her brother, Dan (Claudia) Hockaday, Nashua, N.H.; her mother-in-law, Marjorie Flitsch, Hiawatha, Iowa; as well as numerous loving nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her mother.
