Helen Henderson, 88, of Marion, died Sunday, Jan. 7, 2018, following a sudden illness. Funeral Service: 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2018, at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Cedar Rapids, by Rev. Phil Jorgenson. Visitation: 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2018, at Stewart Baxter Funeral & Memorial Services, Cedar Rapids. Visitation also one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial: Oakland Cemetery, Manchester.
She is survived by five children, Jean (Dennis) Conrad of Manchester, Janet (Doc) Matthews of Cedar Rapids, Jayne Baum of Durham, N.C., Jeff (Lisa) Henderson of Cedar Rapids, and Jackie Henderson of Belle Plaine; grandchildren, Daniel Conrad, Samantha Conrad, Kim Rstom (Grant Ginter), Krissy Rstom, Chelsey Baum (Philip Genova), Josh Henderson (Dr. Jenni Yessa) and Lara Henderson (Sam Roecker); great-grandchildren, Dannika, Mazie, Alijah and Tucker; "adopted" daughter, Denice Decker of Belle Plaine; and extended family and friends.
Helen Marie Woellert was born July 24, 1929, in Sands Springs, Iowa, to John and Cecilia (Gravel) Woellert. At 18 months she was adopted by William "Bill" and Maude (Claus) Philipp of Manchester. She graduated from Manchester High School in 1947. On July 12, 1949, she married Alvin Henderson at the Little Brown Church.
She raised their five children in Manchester and was Alvin's business partner at Henderson Grain Service. Helen was deeply involved in the church choir and altar guild at First Lutheran Church. Following Alvin's death in 1985, she eventually moved to Cedar Rapids, where she worked at St. Jude School and became an active member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church. Helen enjoyed following the activities of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She enjoyed reading, embroidering and traveling, and was an avid conversationalist.
Helen was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Alvin; sisters, Leona Durey and Esther Stimson; and grandson, Nathaniel Henderson.
