SHIRLEY JEAN GIL
Iowa City
Shirley Jean Gil, 87, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on March 30, 2017, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City. Shirley selflessly chose to donate her body to the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine.
Shirley was born May 2, 1929, to Francis "Edith" and Harry Kranz in rural Lockport, Ill. She was the sixth born of 11 children. Shirley lived in Joliet, Ill., for most of her life. She recently moved to Walden Place in Iowa City to be closer to her granddaughter.
Shirley was a model for hard work and dedication to her family. She worked in the restaurant industry and then for Georgia Pacific. Shirley loved cooking big meals for her family, playing cards, watching her favorite game shows and attending any event with live music. Family will fondly remember Shirley for her sense of humor and loyalty to those she loved.
Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, Harry and Edith; her son, Roy Jr.; her brothers, Harry "Butch" and Lloyd Kranz; and her sisters, Myrtle Noon, Doris Lennent, Lois "Toots" Hilton, Beverly Bankford, Marilyn Marco, Betty Kokalj and Darlene Orson.
Shirley is survived by her brother, Donnie Kranz of Evansville, Minn.; her children, Carol Boyd of Salem, Mo., and John Gil of Joliet, Ill.; her granddaughters, Gina (Michael) Brown of Robins, Iowa, Colletta (Robertó) Boyd of Malaga, Spain, Cynthia Stroburg of Nashville, Pascha (Sarah) Boyd of Somerset, N.J., Amanda (Paul) Armstrong of Roanoke, Va., and Amy (Jeff) Smolenski of Joliet; her grandsons, Jordan Gil and Matthew Gil of Pontiac, Ill., Wyatt Gil of Roanoke, Va., and David Gil of Joliet; 11 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
A celebration of life service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 8, at Newman Catholic Student Center (104 E. Jefferson St., Iowa City). A luncheon will follow.
