Dr. Vernon J. Harriman, 88, of Cedar Rapids, died Tuesday, July 5, 2016, at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy in Hiawatha. Crypt-side services at 3 p.m. Friday at Cedar Memorial Park Mausoleum. Pastor Peter Rambo will officiate. Per Vernon's request, there will be no visitation. Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Survivors include many dear friends, including Leslee and Jeff Rambo of Cedar Rapids.
He was preceded in death by his parents and loving wife of 55 years, Helene.
Vernon was born Oct. 7, 1927, in Cedar Rapids, the son of Joseph and Gladys Hach Harriman. He graduated from Polk Elementary School and Franklin High School. He later attended the University of Iowa, where he received his B.A. and master's degrees. He earned his doctorate degree in chemistry from the University of Missouri in Columbus, Mo.
He married Helene C. Dittrich on April 4, 1959, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. Helene passed away in 2013.
Vernon was a member of the National Honor Society. He served as professor of chemistry at several colleges, most recently at Central Missouri State University in Warrensburg, Mo. Vernon enjoyed traveling with his wife, Helene, as well as working in photography together. He was a very skilled carpenter and was very patriotic.
Vernon's memory will be cherished by all who knew and loved him.
