M. LUCILLE COTTRELL
Independence
M. Lucille Cottrell, formerly of Independence, Iowa, died Sunday, April 30, 2018, at Southern Hills Specialty Care Center, Osceola, Iowa.
Lucille was born Sept. 1, 1927, in Hazelton, Iowa, the daughter of Wendell and Blanche (Gillson) Short. She married Donald C. Cottrell on August 4, 1946, in Hazelton, Iowa, and they made their home in Jesup, Iowa. In 1956 they moved to Independence. She volunteered at the Independence Food Pantry and with the American Cancer Society. Due to her volunteer work she received a commendation from the governor. In Lucille's spare time, she continued to visit veterans with the VFW and was a member of the VFW Women's Auxiliary. In 2014, Lucille moved to Osceola, Iowa.
Lucille enjoyed spending time outside, which included bike riding, fishing, gardening and camping.
Lucille is survived by her children, Tom (Jane) Cottrell, Cedar Rapids, Cindy (Dave) Hickman, West Des Moines, and Lori (Jeff) Ehrhardt, Osceola; as well as nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two great- great-grandchildren; and a sister, Adelia Leone Menuey-Blomgren, Waterloo, Iowa.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Wendell and Blanche Short; her husband, Donald Cottrell; and a sister, Margery McCright-Wheatley.
A funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday May 5, 2018, at the First Presbyterian Church in Independence, with the Rev. John Hougen officiating. Burial will be held at Mount Hope Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the church from 9:30 a.m. until services at 10:30 a.m. Saturday.
