Even at 12 frames-per-second, I got one frame where the aircraft were in the frame. The guy in the striped shirt with his arms raised makes the shot for me.F-35A fighter jets with the 33rd Fighter Wing at Eglin Air Force Base perform a flyover before the start of the Big Ten Conference college football game between the Iowa Hawkeyes and the Penn State Nittany Lions at Kinnick Stadium in Iowa City, Iowa, on Saturday, Oct. 12, 2019. Volleyball is my favorite sport to photograph. The action is so fast and relatively unpredictable. I like the intensity on Tenley's face. Maquoketa's Tenley Cavanagh (center) and Sydney Clark block a hit by Beckman's Chloe Ungs during their match during pool play of the WaMaC Conference volley ball tournament at Center Point-Urbana High School in Center Point, Iowa, on Monday, Oct. 14, 2019. The girls finished with times of 21:23.3 and 21:23.4, respectively. (Andy Abeyta/The Gazette)
I get in a rut photographing sports, reaching for my telephotos lenses to isolate the athletes from the distracting backgrounds. I like how the leaves frame the runner and the wide-angle perspective provides context of the event. South Winneshiek's Jamison Meyer nears the 2.5 mile marker during the 1A race at the state qualifying cross country meet at Birdsall Park in Cedar Falls, Iowa, on Thursday, Oct. 24, 2019. Photographers are their worst critics. I overexposed the photo by almost a stop but I think the acton and emotions on the runners' faces make up for it. Western Dubuque's Lauren Klein (left) edges out Dubuque Senior's Kate Miron at the finish line during the 4A race at the state qualifying cross country meet at Birdsall Park in Cedar Falls, Iowa, on Thursday, Oct. 24, 2019. Good storytelling sports photo. I like the body language of the kicker who missed what would have been a game-tying field goal and the celebrations of the Coe players.Simpson kicker Zach Kreider (16) reacts after missing a field goal during the third quarter of their American Rivers Conference football game against the Coe Ko-Hawks at Clark Field in northeast Cedar Rapids, Iowa, on Saturday, Oct. 26, 2019. Coe won 10-7. (Jim Slosiarek/The Gazette)
Just a great celebration shot from a post season football game. I had another frame which was tighter. I like how #68 balances the photograph. It isn't noticeable to the human eye but the lights at Tipton's stadium flicker. It is noticeable to a camera at 1/1000th of a second. I ended up motor driving more than I usually do in the hopes of getting a higher number of well exposed and properly color balanced frames. West Liberty's Lake Newton leaps on West Liberty's Gavin Chown after Chown sacked Tipton quarterback Blake Wilkins during the fourth quarter of their high school football game at City Park Stadium in Tipton, Iowa, on Friday, Oct. 25, 2019. West Liberty won 14-13. (Jim Slosiarek/The Gazette)
It was a physical game between the Hawkeyes and the Buckeyes. I don't have a favorite team. I just want go action. Iowa's Josie Durr collided with Ohio State's Kitty Jones-Black during the first half of their Big Ten Conference women's soccer match at the University of Iowa Soccer Complex in Iowa City, Iowa, on Sunday, Oct. 27, 2019. (Jim Slosiarek/The Gazette)
Not the outcome Hawkeyes fans wanted but my job is a visually document the story of the game. People assume that because I live in Iowa or that I work for an Iowa-based news organization that I am for the 'home' team. I tell them that I don't have a favorite and I just want a good game. Penn State Nittany Lions head coach James Franklin high-fives Lions fans as they celebrate their 17-12 Big Ten Conference college football win over the Iowa Hawkeyes at Kinnick Stadium in Iowa City, Iowa, on Saturday, Oct. 12, 2019. Epenesa (94) goes to sack Penn State Nittany Lions quarterback Sean Clifford (14) as he drops a snap in the first quarter at an Iowa Hawkeyes football game with the Penn State Nittany Lions at Kinnick Stadium in Iowa City on Saturday, Oct. 12, 2019. (Rebecca F. Miller/The Gazette)
Not the sharpest photo as I was handholding a 600mm while simultaneously trying to dodge a video journalist who was inching out in front of me. I broke my own rule when photographing football. Normally, I set up between the goal line and the end zone when a team gets in the red zone. This time, I stayed along the end zone. I'm lucky it all worked out. Iowa Hawkeyes wide receiver Brandon Smith (12) score a touchdown off a Nate Stanley pass during the fourth quarter of their Big Ten Conference college football game against the Penn State Nittany Lions at Kinnick Stadium in Iowa City, Iowa, on Saturday, Oct. 12, 2019.
