Hugh Bergen, 89, of Hiawatha Care Center, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 17, 2015, with his daughters at his side. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Friday, Nov. 20, at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories, Cedar Rapids, officiated by Certified Celebrant Julie Freese. Visitation will be from 5 until 7 p.m. Thursday at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home, Cedar Rapids. Entombment will take place at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery.
Hugh was born Jan. 3, 1926, to Royce and Irma Bergen of Shellsburg. He served in the Navy from 1944 to 1946 on the USS West Virginia. Hugh married Delores Grady on Nov. 9, 1946.
Survivors include two daughters, Jan (Jerald) Short of Hiawatha and Pam (Don) Waters of Shellsburg; four grandchildren, Trent Short of Cedar Rapids, Tanya (Joe) Vitek of Cedar Rapids, Travis (Amanda) Waters of Shellsburg and Ashley Waters of Hiawatha; and four great-grandchildren, Brody and Presley Waters and Triniti and Lillie Vitek.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Delores; infant son, Dennis; his parents; brothers, Richard and Vernon; sisters, Ruth Cox and Kathryn McGranahan; and infant grandson, Richard Waters.
He retired from Colonial Baking Co. and Rockwell Collins. He loved archery, fishing, playing cards, and was an excellent bowler.
A memorial fund has been established in Hugh's name.
