Alden, Verna Rose
Verna Rose Alden, 81, of Masonville, died at her home, surrounded by family, on Sunday, May 12, 2013.
She was born Jan. 22, 1932, in New Vienna, the daughter of Alvin and Marcella (Riesberg) Lammers. Verna was a 1950 Winthrop High School graduate. On Oct. 25, 1950, Verna was united in marriage to William Alden at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Winthrop. Together they lived in the Masonville area. Verna was a homemaker and also was a food service employee at the Lambert School in Manchester for 19 years.
Verna enjoyed spending time with her family and grandchildren, Tuesday tours, the Cubs, and the Hawkeyes.
She was a member of Immaculate Conception Church, I.C. Rosary Society, and Catholic Daughters of the Americas.
Survivors include her four children, Janet (Don) Short of Winthrop, Diane Alden of Manchester and Bill and Jerry Alden, both of Masonville; six grandchildren, Jeff (Anne) Short of Norwalk, Jason (Carol) Short of San Diego, Calif., Justin (Melissa) Short of Minneapolis, Josh Short of Anchorage, Alaska, Kayla and McKenzie Alden of Masonville; three great-grandchildren, Alden, Averyand Blake Short; four siblings, Betty (Bill) Cusick of Dyersville, Les (Janet) Lammers of Estherville, Hank (Connie) Lammers of Winthrop and Charlie (Ellen) Lammers of Manchester; sisters-in-law, Millie Cameron of Independence and Jane Alden of New London; and several nieces and nephews.
Verna was preceded in death by her husband, William on April 27, 1988; her parents, Al and Marcella Lammers; a sister, Doris Ryan; and one brother, Roy Lammers.

Mass of Christian Burial: 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 14, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Masonville, by the Rev. Richard Gaul. Interment: St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, rural Masonville. Visitation: 2 to 7 p.m. Monday at Leonard-Muller Funeral Home in Manchester, with a 2 p.m. Catholic Daughters of the Americas rosary, and also friends may call after 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at the church.
