Short, Robert John Patrick
Robert John Patrick Short, 68, of Monti, Iowa, was born Oct. 21, 1943, in Independence, Iowa, and entered into eternal rest Nov. 15, 2011, at his home.
A lifelong member and supporter of the Monti community, Robert had an appreciation for a thriving corn crop, a pen of well-fed cattle and a perfectly poured pint of Guinness.
In the tradition started by his parents, Matthew and Rose, Robert loved raising family in a beautiful place, valuing hard work, being generous with family, neighbors and community, and all the while finding time to laugh and enjoy life.
Robert graduated from Monti Consolidated School in 1957 and East Buchanan High School in 1961. He served in the United States Marine Corps Reserves from 1962-1968.
Robert and Rosemary Brann were married Dec. 4, 1971, and have two children, Tammy and Kelly. Tammy resides in Lenexa, Kan., and is planning a 2012 marriage to her fiance, John Wolfe. Kelly, his wife, Lacy, and their daughter, Rylee, also reside in Monti.
Robert is also survived by his brother, Jim of Cedar Rapids; his sister, Carol Ann (Larry) Kane of Marion; brother-in-law, Kent Carrothers of Coggon; and mother-in-law, Erma Brann of Independence. Other survivors include sister-in-law, Kay (Lucky) Hoffman of Aurora; nephews, Kevin (Lori) Short, and sons, Matt, Joe and Zach, of Edmund, Okla.; Michael (Kara) Short, and children, Layne, Jace and Addison, of Rochester, Minn.; Dan Kane of Los Angeles, Calif.; Matt (Debbie) Carrothers, and son, Parker, of Roswell, Ga.; T.J (Dawn) Carrothers, and son, Cole, of Ryan; and nieces: Erin (Phil) Joseph of Chicago; Becky (Ben) Taylor, and sons, Lucas and Samuel, of Westminster, Colo.; and Karla (Jamie) Orr, and daughter, Addison, of Janesville, Wis.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Matthew and Rose Short in 1996 and 1998 respectively; his sister, Connie Kay Carrothers in 2006; his nephew, Rob Short in 2010; and his father-in-law, John Brann in 2003.
Our family will miss Robert's true love, loyalty and friendship, his quick Irish wit and his contagious laugh.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 19, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Monti. Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Monti Community Center, with a Scripture service at 8 p.m., and from 9:30 a.m. until service time Saturday at the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Patrick's Monti Catholic Cemetery, the Monti Community Center, the future East Buchanan High School vocational agriculture program or the wishes of the family.
Fawcett's Funeral Home & Cremation Services assisted the family with arrangements.
