Former Hawkeye QB Arvell Nelson starts for Texas Southern

Sep. 7, 2009 3:01 pm
Just happened to be flipping channels the other night and came across the Texas Southern-Prairie View A&M college football game on ESPNU.
The starting quarterback for TSU was .... Arvell Nelson. Yes, that's the same Arvell Nelson that spent a couple years at the University of Iowa.
Nelson was dismissed from the Hawkeye team in March 2008 after being charged with marijuana possession. He played last season as a quarterback and safety at Fort Scott Community College in Kansas.
In Saturday's game, Nelson rotated with another QB. He went 12-for-27 for 112 yards with no interceptions or touchdowns.
"We feel good about him being our trigger guy," said Texas Southern Coach Johnnie Cole.
Prairie View won the game, labeled the Houston Labor Day Classic, 17-7.
