Brainard, Velda
Velda Brainard, 94, died at her home in North English on Thursday, Jan 2, 2014. Memorial Services will be 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 5, at Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in North English. Chaplain Mike Patterson will officiate. Visitation will be Saturday, Jan. 4, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in North English Cemetery.
The family has requested in lieu of flowers, memorials be given to the North English Community Center or First Responders.

Velda B. Brainard was born Feb. 23, 1919, in Delta, Iowa, a daughter of Charles Lee and Viola (Ashley) Baughman. She graduated from Delta High School. Velda was united in marriage to Alfred J. Brainard on Jan. 1, 1937, in Oskaloosa, Iowa. They made their home in Delta until moving to North English in 1941. Velda was a member of the North English United Methodist Church. Alfred preceded her in death in 1983.
In the early years she worked in the North English Meat Locker and later for Evans Photography. She volunteered at the English Valley Care Center. Velda loved to play Pepper at the Community Center, bake, cook, and watch the Iowa Hawkeyes.
She was a devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother
Velda is survived by two children, David Brainard of Marion and Nancy Edwards of North English; sons-in-law, Harold Ransier and Gary Edwards; four grandchildren, Steve Ransier of Rochester, Minn., Nick (Brittney) Edwards of Alta, Jenna Edwards of North Liberty and Amber (Scott) Clinton of Cedar Rapids; and eight great-grandchildren, Chris Ransier, Tina Ransier, Kade Edwards, Peyton Edwards, Bradon Clinton, Jarron Clinton, Scotty Clinton and Alaynna Clinton.
Velda was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a son, Charles Lee; daughter, Shirley Ransier; and five brothers, Clifford, Merle, Charles, Wilbur and Gilbert.
