Griffith, Charlotte
Charlotte Griffith, 90, of Iowa City, died Friday, Dec. 17, 2010, at her home from complications related to leukemia.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 22, at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church with the Rev. Brent Hartwig officiating. Burial will be at Memory Gardens Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service, Iowa City.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Our Redeemer Lutheran Church.
Charlotte was born Oct. 17, 1920, in Mallard, Iowa, the daughter of the Rev. Adolph and Martha (Schleusener) Cagann. She was a graduate of Mallard High School, where she played on the girls basketball team. Charlotte had been crowned the princess at the Iowa State Girls Basketball Tournament. She attended the University of Iowa and on Oct. 12, 1940, married Milton Griffith in Sioux City.
Charlotte was a Johnson County Deputy Clerk of Court in probate for 20 years, retiring in 1986. Before that, Charlotte had been employed for many years at the University of Iowa with the College of Education Iowa Testing Program.
Charlotte was a charter member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, the LWML, Johnson County Legal Secretaries Association and the Mercy Hospital Guild, where she volunteered for 18 years. She loved Hawkeye sports and her Chicago Cubs.
Charlotte is survived by her three children, Michael Griffith, Barb (Ron) Jones and Sheila Payton, all of Iowa City; two grandsons, Scott (Jane) Jones and Todd (Ellen) Jones, both of Iowa City; three great-grandchildren, Rebecca, Robert and Christopher Jones; two stepgreat-grandchildren, Nick (Leena) Lewis and Kristin Lewis; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband in 1981, five sisters and one brother.
