MARION - A beautiful night in Marion was the perfect setting for a great high school softball doubleheader.
Cedar Rapids Prairie played at Linn-Mar on June 16. The Hawks came out swinging when Lauren Kuch hit a home run in the first inning of the first game and rolled to an 8-2 win. The Lions captured the nightcap, 3-2.
Makenna Moenk drove in two runs for the Hawks in the opener and Natalie Halvorson struck out six in a five-hitter.
In the second game, the Lions scored three runs in the bottom of the second inning and Elison Ollinger took the mound to finish the win.
While surprised to be put in late in the game, Ollinger had no trouble holding the lead for the Lions. After pitching three balls, she threw three strikes.
'I just kept chucking fastballs,” Ollinger said.
Both are in action tonight, the Hawks hosting Waterloo West and the Lions entertaining C.R. Xavier. Both double-headers begin at 5:30 p.m.
