Shaw, Eldon Gene
Eldon Gene Shaw, 69, of Edgewood, died Tuesday, Feb. 14, 2012, at Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids. Funeral services: 10:30 a.m. Friday, Feb. 17, at First Lutheran Church, Manchester, with the Rev. Allan Oman and the Rev. Dr. Jean Rabary officiating. Visitation: 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Leonard-Muller Funeral Home in Edgewood and also one hour before services on Friday. Interment, with military rites: Edgewood City Cemetery.
He was born Sept. 15, 1942, in rural Edgewood, the son of Lloyd W. and Vanita M. (Smock) Shaw. Eldon was raised and educated in the Edgewood school system and enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1962. He was honorably discharged in 1963.
On April 4, 1964, Eldon was united in marriage to Dorthy Meisner in Elgin. Three children were born to this union. Together they made their home in Manchester near Delhi for a year, and then to a farm north of Edgewood, living there until 1971, when they moved to Edgewood.
Eldon worked as a welder for Harnischfeger Corp. in Cedar Rapids and also for Bradco/ATI in Delhi.
He was a member of Edgewood American Legion Post 512. Eldon enjoyed watching NASCAR and golf on television, and loved taking care of his lawn and garden.
Survivors include his wife, Dorthy Shaw of Edgewood; two daughters, Annette (Jeff) Heims of Dundee and Dawn (Rob) Medberry of Volga; one son, Earl (Teresa) Shaw of Manchester; 11 grandchildren, Jake (special friend, Mary Jo Welcher) of Manchester, Brad, Rachel and Calvin Heims, all of Dundee, Max, Madelin, Maria and Mayleigh Medberry of Volga, Spencer, Brendon and Trent Shaw of Manchester; two great-grandchildren, Rayleigh and Jackson Heims of Manchester; two sisters, Linda (the late Russell) Hauschild of Edgewood and Twila (Nelson) Converse of Postville; one brother, Les (Vicky) Shaw of Emory, Texas; brothers-in-law, Mervin (the late Elva Mae) Larson of Postville, George (Barbara) Lerch of El Reno, Okla., Lyle (Chris) Meisner of Clermont, Ivan (Jeannie) Meisner of Farmersburg and Glen (Kathy) Meisner of Iowa City; one sister-in-law, Edith (the late Lawrence Lerch) Seitz of Elkader; three aunts, JoAnn (Jim) Jensen of Finchford, Janet Akana of Orangeville, Calif., and Judy (the late Ted) Smock of Cedar Falls; and several nieces and nephews.
Eldon was preceded in death by his parents, Lloyd and Vanita Shaw; his paternal grandparents, Earl and Ida Shaw; and his maternal grandparents, Ted and Pearl Smock.
