JOAN A. HUBBARD
Marion
Joan A. Hubbard, 88, of Des Moines, formerly of Marion, died Friday morning, Dec. 11, 2015, at Kavanagh House on 56th Street in Des Moines.
A memorial service will be held at a later date. As was her wish, Joan's body was donated to the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine. She will later rest at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery in Cedar Rapids.
Joan was born on April 26, 1927, in Chicago, Ill., to Alfred and Grace (Nelson) Olsen. Joan attended Augustana College in Illinois for two years. She then transferred to Coe College in Cedar Rapids and completed her degree in 1949. She and her husband, Joe, met at a dance at Coe College. On Jan. 28, 1950, Joan was united in marriage to Joseph Hubbard in Chicago. To this union, five children were born.
After marriage, she worked at Collins Radio for one year and then retired to raise her family. When her youngest child started school, Joan returned to Mount Mercy College to obtain her teaching certificate, which she accomplished in 1964. She began teaching second grade at Emerson Elementary in Marion and held that position for the next 23 years.
Joan never just sat. Her hands were always busy – knitting, sewing, cross-stitching, cooking, gardening and canning. Her family's needs took priority. Square dancing and later ballroom dancing, for which she and her husband won a number of awards, as well as music and theater, were favorite activities she shared with her husband. She had a lovely voice and she sang in college choirs. Reading when time allowed, and traveling the U.S. and Canada with her family, and later Europe with her husband, gave her great pleasure. Joan was also a member of ADK teaching sorority.
Joan is survived by her children, Jeff (Lucretia) Hubbard of Victoria, Texas, Paul (Connie) Hubbard of Appleton, Wis., Nancy (Mike) Kammerer of Des Moines and Ann (Chris) Schwarck of Mason City; seven grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Joe; infant son, Thomas; and her parents. In addition, her brothers, William and Alfred T. Jr., and a sister, Doris, all preceded her.
Memorial donations in Joan's name may be made to Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF).
Online condolences may be directed to the family at www.cedarmemorial.com under obituaries.
