Verna Mae Yoder was born Jan. 15, 1927, in Kokomo, Ind., the daughter of Andrew and Elizabeth (Beachy) Beachy. On June 3, 1948, she married David L. Yoder, with whom she shared 67 years of marriage. She was a member of the Sunnyside Mennonite Church. Verna was a homemaker and volunteered at Pleasantview Home, Crowded Closet and also helped grade Bible studies for Prison Ministries. She enjoyed gardening, growing and arranging flowers, and writing. She pieced and knotted hundreds of comforters for Mennonite Central Committee and Christian Aid Ministries. Verna passed away Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2018, at Pleasantview Home at the age of 91 years.
Verna is survived by seven children, Joy Yoder-Washington of Baltimore, Md., Grace (Nelson) Weber of Reading, Pa., Faith (Dale) Hostetler of John's Island, S.C., James (Trish) Yoder of Goshen, Ind., Lowell (Mary) Yoder of Kalona, Lilly (Danny) Northrup of Iowa City and Mary Jewel Abbott of Centerville; 12 grandchildren, Tara, David, Andrew, Chris, James, Danny, Lynelle, David, Michael, Joel, Elizabeth and Jonathan; nine great-grandchildren, Hudson, Emerson, Hannah, Riley, Lucy, Esther, Sophia, Marshall and Emma; four sisters, Mary Gingerich of Walnut Creek, Ohio, Bertha Beachy of Goshen, Ind., Wilma Gingerich of Harrisonburg, Va., and Clara Yoder of Harrisonburg, Va.; and a brother, Mose Beachy of Goshen, Ind. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband in 2016; two sons, John and Lynn; two sons-in-law, Jeff Washington and Carl Abbott; two sisters, Esther Beachy and Fannie Miller; and two brothers, Floyd and Alvin Beachy.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Sept. 24, 2018, at Sunnyside Mennonite Church in Kalona. Burial will be held in the Fairview Cemetery, rural Kalona. Visitation will be from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 23, 2018, at Sunnyside Mennonite Church. A memorial fund has been established for Pleasantview Home Memory Care Unit.
