Hillis, Isabelle
Isabelle Hillis, 85, a resident of Hiawatha Care Center, formerly of Story City, passed away Saturday, Aug. 24, 2013, at St. Luke's Hospice Care in Cedar Rapids, surrounded by her two daughters, Barbara and Pamela. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 28, at Grace United Methodist Church in Story City, with graveside services at Gilbert Cemetery to follow. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Soderstrum Funeral Home in Story City.
Isabelle was born Jan. 25, 1928, on the farmstead in Fernald, Iowa. She graduated from Milford Township and worked at the Iowa State Extension, until meeting her husband of 50 years, Donald Hillis. She retired from Graphic Forms in Nevada, Iowa, in 1989.
Isabelle was a long time member of Grace United Methodist Church. She enjoyed fishing with Don, reading novels, family activities and loved spending time with her friends.
She is survived by her daughters, Barbara (David) Owenson and Pamela Horan. She is also survived by seven grandchildren, Jeff (Haley) Owenson, Michael Horan, Megan Horan, Donald Hillis, David (Ashley) Hillis, Rebecca Hillis and Sarah Hillis; granddaughter-in-law, Laura Owenson; six great-grandchildren, Stephanie, Ryan, Brett, Mia, Rylee and Gabrielle; her nephews and nieces; and one sister-in-law, Margaret Brooks.
Isabelle is preceded in death by her husband, Donald; her son, Roger; her grandson, Jason; her parents, David and Jenny Brooks; four brothers, Lester, Virgil, Mervin and La Vern; and two sisters, Genevieve and Virginia.
The family wants to thank the Hiawatha Care Center Staff, St. Luke's Hospital, the nursing staff on 5 East and the St. Luke's Hospice Staff. The family would like to extend a very special thank you to Dr. Mary Anne Nelson for her loving care and support. Bless you all.
