Harlan Harrison Appleby, 95, of Arthur, Ill., formerly of Manchester, passed away at 11:44 p.m. Wednesday, March 25, 2015, at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana, Ill.
Harlan was born Aug. 30, 1919, in Delhi, Iowa, a son of Walter and Maude Myrtle (Shepherd) Appleby. He graduated from Delhi High School in 1936 and was a four-year letterman in baseball and basketball. He married LaVerne Pauline Guess on April 20, 1941, in Man-chester. He worked as a dairy farmer, then a beef farmer until he retired in 1979.
He enjoyed fishing, hunting, woodworking, refinishing furniture, baseball, and spending time with family and friends.
Harlan is survived by his wife of 73 years, LaVerne P. Appleby; one son, Terry Appleby and his wife, Mildred, of Sullivan, Ill.; two grandchildren, Ronni Bayes and her husband, Tom, of Sullivan, Ill., and Harlan Alvin Appleby and his wife, Denise, of Murrurundi, New South Wales, Australia; three great-grandchildren, Holli and TJ Bayes and Mahalia Appleby; and five nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Donald Appleby.
Harlan was an active member of Zion United Church of Christ, Arthur, Ill.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Saturday, March 28, at Zion United Church of Christ, 701 N CR 250 E, rural Arthur, Ill. The Rev. Dennis Hanner will officiate. Burial will be in Zion Cemetery, rural Arthur, Ill. Visitation will be one hour before the funeral at the church. Edwards Funeral Home in Arcola, Ill., is assisting with arrangements.
