ROBERT EUGENE "LUCKY" LUCKASON
Cedar Rapids
Robert Eugene "Lucky" Luckason, 73, of Cedar Rapids, died Saturday, May 5, 2018, after a short illness. There will be no memorial service.
Lucky was born Dec. 28, 1944, in Cedar Rapids, the second child and only son of Mildrede (DeVault) Luckason and Andrew Luckason. Except for his time serving in the U.S. Navy, Lucky lived his entire life in Eastern Iowa. Lucky attended Washington High School, from where he graduated in 1963 and competed on the bowling team that won the state championship.
Lucky enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served as a hospital corpsman. He was honorably discharged in 1970 after his tour of duty in Vietnam. Following his discharge, Lucky attended William Penn College in Oskaloosa.
Lucky married Marybelle Elam on Sept. 7, 1974. They both worked at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics for many years, with Lucky serving as a central sterilizing technician II for 38 years, retiring in 2010. In his free time, Lucky enjoyed gardening, camping with Marybelle in their RV, visits to Union Grove Lake, quilting and sitting down with his friends for a hot cup of coffee at the Casey's Social Club (Mount Vernon Road Chapter).
Lucky will be greatly missed by those of us who loved him. Survivors include his wife of 44 years, Marybelle Luckason; his beloved Golden Retrievers, Emma (preceded by Jake, Mary Kate, Katydid and Daphne the Cockapoo); his sister, Shirley Miller of Cedar Rapids; brother-in-law, Jeff Elam of Iowa City; sister-in-law, Heidi Brodersen (Eric) of Madison, Wis.; niece, Erin Brodersen Bailey (Marcus) of Madison; nephew, Cary Miller (Crystal) of Kansas City, Mo.; nephew, Brad Miller (and children Wyatt, Finn and Olivia) of St. Paul, Minn.; and numerous beloved cousins.
In lieu of flowers, friends and family are invited to make tribute gifts in Lucky's memory to the Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation, 505 Fifth Ave., Suite 444, Des Moines, IA 50309; www.inhf.org.
