Wayne Thomas Gregory was born Dec. 20, 1934, in Clinton, Iowa, the son of Jesse and Helen (Kunz) Gregory. He was a 1952 graduate of Clinton High School. Wayne repaired appliances in the Clinton area for over 50 years. He owned and operated Reliable Service, Inc., for 40 years until his retirement in 2004. Wayne married Jane E. Bullard on May 4, 1957. He later married Marcia Hamilton Volrath on June 1, 1985.
Wayne will be remembered for his honesty, generosity, integrity and hard work. He was always ready to help someone in need and he could fix or build anything. He enjoyed many fun times at his cabin at Storm Haven on the Mississippi River. He loved to garden, camp, and always had a project. His grandchildren were very important to him. After retirement he lived for his winters in Yuma, Ariz., and the many friends he made there. He was a member of the VFW, Clinton Moose Lodge, First Baptist Church in Camanche and Sundance RV Club in Yuma, Ariz. He served in the United States Army from 1957-1959.
Wayne is survived by two daughters, Winnie (Randy) Hofsommer of Solon and Mari (James) Mathiesen of Clinton; six grandchildren, Greg and Nick Hofsommer, Emily (Kendall) Dykstra, Matthew (Jessica) Kinkaid, Aimee (John) Hannan and Robert (Erica) Mathiesen; three great-grandchildren; three sisters, Joy (Marion) Tilton of Hoodsport, Wash., Carol (John) Langrehr of Davenport and Elaine (Glenn) Trout of Bettendorf, one brother, Jay (DeReva) Gregory of Killeen, Ala.; and many nieces and nephews.
Wayne was preceded in death by his parents, both wives, and one infant brother.
The family wants to express a very special thank you to all of his camping friends and all of his neighbors, especially Eddie Doyle, who was a great friend who always looked out for Wayne toward the end. We also want to thank the staff at Mercy Home Care and Hospice, the staff at Mercy Radiation and Oncology Center and his physician, Dr. Oduah Osaro, who he considered a close friend.
A memorial fund has been established in Wayne's memory.
