Marie Katherine Emerson, 88, a longtime resident of Albuquerque, N.M., passed away Feb. 18, 2016. She was born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, on Aug. 10, 1927, the daughter of Frank and Anna Unzeitig.
She graduated from McKinley High School in 1945 and later attended the University of Iowa, graduating in 1949 with a bachelor's degree in home economics. She taught high school home economics first in Cedar Rapids and then Lisbon, where she met her future husband, Eugene Emerson. She and Gene were married in 1951 in Cedar Rapids.
Marie, Gene and their infant son, David, moved to Albuquerque in 1955 and Gene began working at Sandia National Laboratories. In 1963, her second son, Michael, was born.
Marie was an avid gardener and a longtime member of La Noche Garden Club. She served for over 20 years as a master gardener with the Albuquerque Area Extension, assisting callers with their many gardening questions. She also liked tent and trailer camping in the mountains with Gene and the kids. One of her favorite spots was Vallecito Lake in Colorado.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years.
She is survived by her two sons, David and his wife, Carolyn, of Sugar Land, Texas, and Michael and his wife, Kathryn Naassan, of Albuquerque; three grandchildren, Lauren Emerson and Sara Emerson of Sugar Land, Texas, and Julia Emerson of Albuquerque; her brother, David Unzeitig and his wife, Barbara, of Cedar Rapids; and her sister-in-law, Lenore Jones of Lisbon.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Friday, March 4, at 10 a.m. at Queen of Heaven Catholic Church, 5311 Phoenix Ave. NE, Albuquerque. A visitation will be Thursday, March 3, from 5 to 7 p.m. at French Funerals & Cremations- University in Albuquerque. A private committal service will take place at Santa Fe National Cemetery.
Should friends desire, memorial contributions may be made in lieu of flowers to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) at www.aspca.org.
