W. June (Harper) Chabot died peacefully at home April 8, 2017, after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease.
June was born in 1935, the only daughter of Clyde and Bertha Harper, and grew up on a small farm near Elmira, Mo., a coal mining town in the hills of northwestern Missouri. June was always a natural at teaching, and from a very young age she let everyone know that one day she would become a school teacher. Through hard work and unstoppable determination, June was able to realize that goal and many others. In addition to her award-winning 35-year teaching career, June visited over 80 countries, volunteering on special projects such as digging for artifacts, planning ancient city anniversaries, building houses and living and teaching in China and Honduras after her retirement.
At home in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, June was extremely active in local organizations that supported world peace and friendship with other countries and their people. She believed wholeheartedly that we are all more alike than we are different, and if we could only get to know each other better, the world would soon become a safer, more peaceful place.
In addition to the hard work of teaching second grade and raising two children, June pursued her hobbies with her characteristic enthusiasm. Whether refurbishing homes, gardening, sewing or square dancing, her passion was infectious. All who knew her would agree that this unbridled curiosity and zeal for adventure were the most fascinating and attractive aspects of her character. She was indeed passionate about everything she did and it always showed. Her love for her family and friends always showed too. She will be profoundly missed by all.
June is survived by her two dearly loved children, Keith Walden and Sydney Walden; her brother, Daniel Harper; her niece, Jennifer (Harper) Bryan; her nephews, Daniel Harper Jr. and Jonathan Harper; her great-nephews, Maxwell Bryan and Morgan Bryan; and a number of other relatives and close friends.
In Cedar Rapids, her friends and children will gather for a memorial on Saturday, April 15, from 1 to 3 p.m. at 3315 Eastern Ave. NE. A family service will be held in Elmira, Mo., on June 20, 2017.
