James "Jim" Halstead, 81, died Thursday, June 11, 2015, at Crestview Acres Care Center in Marion. Funeral services: 1 p.m. Sunday, June 14, at United Parish Church in Coggon. Visitation will be one hour before the service at the church.
Jim is survived by two sisters, Phyllis Decious of Cedar Rapids and Norma Vande Vegte of Man-chester; a brother, Bill (Pat) Halstead of Marion; a brother-in-law, Manly Ray LeClere of Cedar Rapids; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Doris LeClere; brothers-in-law, the Rev. Gaylon Decious and Harold Vande Vegte; and a niece, Yvonne (LeClere) McGowan.
Jim was born in Coggon, Iowa, the son of Willis and Beatrice (Barker) Halstead, on Jan. 5, 1934. He received his education at Coggon School. Jim was employed by Witwer Grocers. He and his dad worked as painters in the Coggon area for several years, and he was employed at Kirkwood Community College for 20 years until his retirement.
Jim was an avid reader– history, the Old West and Sherlock Holmes being favorites.
He was a very loving and much loved uncle to his many nieces and nephews. His life was centered around others. Every year on his birthday he took a cake to share with his fellow employees.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established which will be shared with many of the organizations in Coggon of which he was a member.
