James W. Henderson, a resident of Keystone Place, Cedar Rapids, formerly of Coggon and Toddville, died Saturday, Aug. 16, 2014, at St. Luke's Hospital, Cedar Rapids. Memorial services: 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 19, at Zion Presbyterian Church, Coggon, by Pastor Leonard Ranson. The family will greet friends from 3 to 6 p.m. Monday, Aug. 18, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center, Marion.
Survivors include his wife, Marjorie; children, Dr. Karla Henderson of Estes Park, Colo., Sue (Stan Hill) Henderson of Cedar Rapids and Lyn (Ivan) McBride of Toddville; three grandchildren, Leanna (Luke) Showman of Huxley, Iowa, Sarah McBride of Toddville and Calvin McBride of Toddville; two great-grandchildren, Nora and Ayla Showman; and brother, Robert (Darlene) Henderson of Coggon.
He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Margaret Hill.
Jim was born Oct. 10, 1923, in Coggon, the son of Arthur and Mabel (Drexler) Henderson. He graduated from Coggon High School in 1940. Jim was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Force, having served three years in the European Theater during World War II. He married Marjorie Meints on Jan. 1, 1947, in Ryan, Iowa.
Jim was a lifelong farmer; he loved the land and was an active soil conservationist.
He was a member of Zion Presbyterian Church in Coggon, the Cattlemen's Association, Sheep Producers, Pork Producers and the 2-Cylinder Club.
Jim was very proud of his service to his country and attended many Army reunions. He dearly loved his family and enjoyed traveling, as well as collecting antique farm machinery.
A memorial fund has been established in Jim's memory.
