White, June Williams
June Williams White, 90, passed away peacefully on June 20, 2011, at Crestview Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, in West Branch.
June was born June 8, 1921, in Johnson County, Iowa, to Louise (Hastings) Williams and Everett Williams. She grew up on a farm outside of Iowa City, graduating from City High School in 1940. June was City High's first homecoming queen. She also attended the University of Iowa and married the love of her life, Robert H. White, on March 1, 1944, in Corpus Christi, Texas. They then returned to Iowa City, where they raised three sons, Terry, Tom and Tim.
June loved antiques and tending to her flowers and plants. She also enjoyed attending City High School and Hawkeye football games with her husband, Bob. Mostly, she enjoyed the company of friends and family.
She was a member of the Nathaniel Fellows DAR, Order of the Eastern Star, Old Capitol Questers and First United Methodist Church and was active in the women's group there. June worked at the U.S. Department of Commerce in Chicago during World War II and also at the University of Iowa Dental Clinic and Registrar's office.
June is survived by her three children, Terry (Jody) White of Plano, Texas, Tim (Joan) White of Denver, Colo., and Tom White of Denver, Colo.; four grandchildren, Chase, Riley, Halie and Robert White; one brother, Tom Williams of Iowa City; and one sister, Diane Hobson of Marshalltown.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Don Williams; and husband of 59 years, Robert H. White.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made in Bob and June White's name to “Stand Up For City High Sports Complex Campaign” or the American Diabetes Association.
A visitation to celebrate her life will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, June 24, at Gay and Ciha Gay Funeral Home in Iowa City. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 25, at 10:30 a.m. at First United Methodist Church, Iowa City. (Sunday Parking Ordinance will be in effect for the streets near the church.)
