Jeanette May Christner, 90, died Tuesday, July 15, 2014, at Mercy Iowa City, surrounded by family. Friends are welcome to join the family at a Garden Party at Jeanette's home Sunday, July 20, from 1 to 3 p.m. A Celebration of Life will be 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 10, at First Mennonite Church, with the Rev. Bob Smith and the Rev. Mag Smith officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to First Mennonite Church, Mennonite Mission Board or the Mennonite Central Committee.
Jeanette was born Sept. 9, 1923, in Wayland, the daughter of Lester and Lena Rich Krabill. On Jan. 1, 1948, Jeanette married Truman Christner in Washington, Iowa.
Jeanette was a member of First Mennonite Church and the Christian Women's Club. She volunteered with the American Red Cross, Crowded Closet and World Marketplace. Jeanette loved to do needlework, embroidery, garden and cook, especially applesauce and apple butter, from her own trees.
Jeanette is survived by her five children, Anthony (Dianne) Christner, Brenda Christner and Eric Christ-ner, all of Iowa City, Cheryl Christner (Timothy White) of New Boston, N.H., and Douglas (Karen) Christner of Coralville; 10 grandchildren, Peter, Alissa, Hattie, Willis, Breeze, Beth, Allison, Lena, Ryan and Matthew; seven great-grandchildren, Jack, Kelli, Abbey, Dade, Kinder, Oren and Ada May; and one sister, Joanna McCreedy of Denver, Colo.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; infant daughter, Felicia; and three siblings, Vincent, Milburn and Evelyn Tate.
Arrangements are with Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service in Iowa City.
