Carpenter, Lewis
Lewis Carpenter, 90, of Waterloo, died Monday, Oct. 5, 2009, at the Iowa Veterans Home, Marshalltown, of natural causes. Services: 10:30 a.m. Friday at Queen of Peace Catholic Church, Waterloo, with burial in Fairview Cemetery. Full military rites will be conducted by Waterloo AMVETS Post 19 and Evansdale AMVETS Post 31. Public visitation: 4 to 8 p.m. today at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway, Waterloo, where there will be a 4 p.m. Legion of Mary rosary and 7 p.m. vigil service. Visitation also will be one hour before services Friday at the church.
Survivors include: a son, Robert (Polly) Graves Jr. of Atkins; two daughters, Nancy (Robert) Gillen of Osage and Bernice (Robert) Knoke of Belle Plaine; 17 grandchildren; 41 great-grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Helen Rorke of Fort Dodge and Virginia (Tom) Grosclose of Idaho.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Linda Reed; a grandson, Caleb Fitzpatrick; seven brothers and five sisters.
He was born Jan. 24, 1919, in Waterloo, the son of Bill and Lotty Bebe Carpenter. He married Esther Jane George on July 9, 1946, in Kansas City. She died April 15, 2005. Mr. Carpenter was head custodian at Irving School, Waterloo. He served in the United States Army during World War II receiving the Purple Heart.
