Achenbach, LaVerne
LaVerne Achenbach, 69, of Snellville, Ga., passed away Sunday, Aug. 5, 2012, at his home after a long battle with pancreatic cancer.
He is survived by his wife, Diane Mical; mother, Mary Achenbach, Cedar Rapids; brother, Daryl Achenbach (Linda), Omaha, Neb.; two sons, Alan Achenbach, Aurora, Colo., and Larry Achenbach (Kelli), Spirit Lake; two nieces, Marci Achenbach Erlandson, Littleton, Colo., and Dr. Jenna Achenbach, Aurora, Colo.; and four grandchildren, Michael, Rebekah, Caleb and Rachel.
He was preceded in death by his father, Lloyd Achenbach.
LaVerne was an Army Vietnam veteran. He was a member of the U.S. Paralympics team that competed in Seoul, Korea in 1988. He competed for almost 40 years in wheelchair athletics, and at one time he was one of the top 20 wheelchair racers in the United States.
Per LaVerne's wishes, no services were held.
Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society for pancreatic cancer research.
