Wayne A. Stein, 89, passed away Monday, May 2, 2016, at Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy, Hiawatha. Visitation: 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 4, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Marion, where a parish vigil will be held at 4 p.m. Funeral Mass: 10:30 a.m. Thursday, May 5, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Marion, conducted by Father David O'Connor. Burial: 2 p.m. Thursday at Calvary Cemetery, Ryan.
Wayne is survived by his wife, Maxine of Cedar Rapids; children, Greg (Kathleen) Stein of Chandler, Ariz., Larry (Nancy) Stein of Robins, Kay (Mark) McMann of Williamsburg, Cindy (Dale) Dugenske of Cedar Rapids, Joe (Andrea) Stein of Naperville, Ill., and Janice (Steve) Kelly of Marion; 11 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Arlene Stien of Ionia, Mich.; brother-in-law, Frank Marshall (Betty) Mangold of Cedar Rapids; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and his brother, Warren Stien.
Wayne was born July 19, 1926 in Newhall, the son of Albert and Rose (Hickey) Stien. After graduating from Newhall High School, Wayne served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and then in the Army Reserves during the Korean Conflict. On Aug. 22, 1949, he married Maxine Ellen Mangold in Ryan. Wayne retired from the United States Postal Service as the Newhall postmaster in 1981. After his retirement, Wayne was an avid golfer. He achieved four "holes-in-one"! In June of 2012, Wayne participated in the Honor Flight.
Wayne was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, a 71-year member of American Legion Post 167 of Newhall, a volunteer firefighter in Newhall and a member of the Tara Hills Country Club Golf Course in Van Horne.
Memorial contributions may be made either to Newhall American Legion Post 167 or the Eastern Iowa Honor Flight.
