Ambrose Schlarmann was born July 14, 1915, in North Fork Township, Delaware County, Iowa, the son of Bernard and Margaret Kramer Schlarmann. Ambrose attended school at Earlville. He started farming with his mother at an early age following the death of his father. He also worked as a hired farm hand.
Ambrose Schlarmann and Henrietta Prull were married Oct. 4, 1939, at St. Matthew's Lutheran Church, Monticello. The couple farmed for five years on the Jones-Delaware county line north of Monticello. In 1944, the couple moved to their home and farm in Castle Grove Township. Following Hattie's death in 2004, Biff moved to Monticello. In 2009, his health forced him to move to the Monticello Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
Biff played the piano-accordion in a band in his younger years, playing at many barn dances and events. The last song of the night was always "Home Sweet Home."
Biff had been a 4-H leader for the Castle Grove Royal Rangers and served on the Jones County Extension Council. He had also served on the church board at S.S. Peter and Paul Lutheran Church.
