Doris M. Levsen, 95, died on May 8, 2018, at Oaknoll Retirement Residence.
Doris was born on May 16, 1922, near Olin, to Harry and Minna (Rohwedder) Levsen. She graduated from Olin High School and the University of Iowa College of Nursing. In 1947, she began her career at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, becoming assistant director of nursing in 1953. In
1957, she earned her master's degree, and
in 1963, she became associate director of nursing, a position she held until her retirement in 1988. Throughout her career she inspired nurses to improve their skills and achieve advancement.
Doris is survived by her sisters-in-law, Marlene (Joe) Levsen of Olin and Mavis (Jay) Levsen of Marion. She was preceded in death by her siblings, Herbert (Gerry) Levsen, Erna (Paul) White, Mary Levsen, Jay Levsen and Joe Levsen.
Doris was a member of the Unitarian Universalist Society and Altrusa, and a reliable supporter of the environment and social justice.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, June 12, at the Unitarian Universalist Society, 2355 Oakdale Rd., Coralville. Memorial donations, which will support nursing student financial aid, may be made out to the University of Iowa Center for Advancement, with "In memory of Doris Levsen" on the memo line.
