The semi-amazing saga of Scott Chandler
Mike Hlas Sep. 12, 2011 7:45 am
This is a story. It's almost a fairy tale.
Scott Chandler was at the University of Iowa tent at the John Deere Classic in the Quad Cities in July. I wondered to myself what he was doing these days. I wasn't sure if he still had an NFL team to call his own.
The former Hawkeye tight end had one, all right. It was the Buffalo Bills, whom he joined last December. Then he won the starting job in training camp this summer. Then he played against the Kansas City Chiefs Sunday.
And had his first NFL touchdown catch. And had his second NFL touchdown catch. Buffalo routed the Chiefs, 41-7. Chandler, who had just one reception over his previous 14 NFL games, now has six.
In this Buffalo News story, we get great nuggets like this:
"I knew that (his team had found a tight end in Chandler)," Bills coach Chan Gailey said. "Nobody else I don't think did. I thought we had something in Scott Chandler that creates something good for us in the passing game."
And ...
Drafted by the San Diego Chargers in 2007, Chandler played one game in '07 and spent the entire 2008 season on injured reserve before being waived. Then he was signed by Dallas and was waived. Then the New York Giants. Then the Cowboys again. The Bills picked him up last December and he started the regular season finale against the New York Jets.
"I made a decision after I got cut the first time that I was going to do this until nobody called," Chandler said. "People kept calling."
And this ...

Bills General Manager Buddy Nix was the Chargers' assistant general manager in 2007 when San Diego drafted Chandler.
In this WGRZ.com story, Buffalo running back Fred Jackson says this about Chandler:
"Anytime you got a guy like that, that can get open and make plays like he did for us today, it's going to take pressure off of (receiver) Steve Johnson, it's going to take pressure off of (quarterback Ryan) Fitzpatrick."
Jackson is a pretty good story himself, having gone from Coe College in Cedar Rapids to a low-level indoor football team called the Sioux City Bandits to making the Bills' roster as a free agent.
Jackson had 20 carries for 112 yards Sunday. In his fifth NFL season, Jackson has 2,972 career rushing yards and another 1,098 yards in receiving.
