Ironside may become regular driver at Hawkeye Downs

Jun. 27, 2012 9:56 am
Mark Ironside attended Hawkeye Downs Speedway races while he grew up in southwest Cedar Rapids.
He had his favorite drivers and periodically watched races as he became a two-time NCAA wrestling champion and four-time All-American for the University of Iowa.
Ironside competed in a celebrity charity race on Van Meter Night at the asphalt track June 15. The event stirred a desire in Ironside and now it appears he might be more active when it comes to racing. Ironside has confirmed he purchased a Legends race car and will attempt to run it at Hawkeye Downs before the end of the season. He said if all goes well he could race as early as July 27.
Ironside finished second to Van Meter CFO Mick Slinger and ahead of current Iowa wrestling coach Tom Brands.
Ironside was a two-time state wrestling champion (1992 and 1993) for Cedar Rapids Jefferson.
