Marie H. Oliver, 93, of Keswick, passed away at the Keokuk County Heath Center in Sigourney on Sunday, Nov. 22, 2015, after a brief illness. Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 24, at Powell Funeral Home in Sigourney, where there will be a wake service at 4 p.m. The funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 25, at St Mary Catholic Church in Sigourney. Burial will be at Sixteen Cemetery near Thornburg.
Marie was born near Harper, Iowa, to Joseph A. and Maud (Clarahan) Vogel on Oct. 15, 1922. She married Don Oliver on March 19, 1943, in Kirksville, Mo. Marie and Don farmed together near Keswick from 1947 until his death in 1980. She remained on the farm until a few weeks before her death.
Marie was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Keswick for 59 years until it closed; St Mary's Catholic Church, Sigourney; St Mary's Altar & Rosary Society; Mercy Iowa City auxiliary; and the American Legion Auxiliary, Keswick. She volunteered at the veterans hospital in Iowa City for eight years and then began volunteering for Mercy Iowa City, making over 15,000 newborn baby caps. Marie was dedicated to her family and loved spending time with them. She was known for her extremely hard work and determination, meticulous lawn and her cutout cookies loved by her family.
Marie is survived by three daughters, Janice Strang of Urbandale, Jane (Dan) O'Toole of Oelwein and Patricia Oliver of Cedar Rapids. Also surviving are four grandchildren, Jon (Jackie) of Johnston, Michelle (Jeff) Moore and Jeneane (Wayne) Stepan of Iowa City and Jennifer O'Toole of West Des Moines; seven great-grandchildren; and siblings, Dorothy Fisher and Stanley Vogel, all of Sigourney, and Gordon Vogel of Louisville, Ky.
Preceding her in death were her husband, Don; son-in-law, Dennis Strang; and brother, Joseph R. Vogel.
The family wishes to thank Hospice of Keokuk County and the Keokuk County Health Center staff for their excellent care.
In lieu of flowers, it was Marie's wishes that memorials be given to Sixteen Cemetery Flag Fund, Hospice of Keokuk County or St Mary's Catholic Church.
