Phyllis J. Shimak, 78, of Gilbertville, died Tuesday, April 19, 2016, at Western Home Communities, Cedar Falls.
She was born June 4, 1937, in Fairview, the daughter of Richard and Bernice Parisho Rathjens. She married Edward W. Shimak on April 27, 1957, in Cedar Rapids. He died Oct. 23, 2013. Phyllis was a homemaker and involved in the CCD program at Immaculate Conception School in Gilbertville for many years.
Survivors include three sons, Martin (Sandra) of Cedar Rapids, Michael (Carolyn) of Cresco and Matthew (Janel) of Cedar Rapids; three daughters, Monica (Michael) Stanley of Janesville, Wis., Maureen Meade of Cedar Rapids and Michelle (Glen Marshall) Shimak of Cedar Falls; 13 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; a brother, Richard (Pat) Rathjens of Cedar Rapids; and three sisters, Gloria (Wayne) Purscell of Des Moines, Julie Bunce of Savage, Minn., and Loretta Rathjens of Des Moines.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, James Rathjens.
Services: 10:30 a.m. Saturday, April 23, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Gilbertville, with burial in Holy Trinity Cemetery, Protivin. Visitation: 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on South Street, Waterloo, where there will be a 4 p.m. rosary. Visitation also one hour before services Saturday at the church.
