R. STEVE DURR
Solon
R. Steve Durr of Solon, 68, passed Thursday, Aug. 7, 2014, at Lantern Park care facility in Coralville after a courageous battle with cancer. Services will be 5 p.m. Monday, Aug. 11, at Brosh Chapel in Solon, followed by a celebration of life gathering from 5:30 to 7 p.m. in The Avacentre at Brosh Chapel. A private graveside service, with full military rites, will be at Iowa Veterans Cemetery, Des Moines.
Steve was a union electrician by trade and spent nearly 30 years at the ADM plant in Cedar Rapids with ACME Electric, where he finished his career as an electrical superintendent.
Steve enlisted in the armed services following his graduation from Washington High School in 1964. He spent four years in the Air Force and received a number of accolades, including an Air Medal, Vietnam Service Medal and Presidential Unit Citation. It was not until May 2014, nearly 45 years after he was injured by anti-aircraft fire in Vietnam, that he was presented the Purple Heart.
In 1966, he married his high school sweetheart, Linda Kennedy. Together they had two sons, David and Eric.
Steve never missed a football game or a track meet while his kids grew up in Solon. Later in life he spent a lot of time on the Mississippi River boating with his wife, Linda, and friends. He also enjoyed motorcycling and became an excellent marksman.
Steve is survived by his wife, Linda; his sons, Dave (Salina) Durr and Eric (Julie) Durr, both of Solon; and grandchildren, Jaden, Halston, Madi, Josie, Delainey and Ellie.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests a donation in Steve's memory to the Wounded Warriors Project: P.O. Box 758517 Topeka, KS 66675.
