Gary L. Fabert, 71, of Cedar Rapids, died Monday, Nov. 6, 2017, after a long illness. Memorial services with military rites at 11 a.m. Friday at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories. Friends may call after 9 a.m. Friday at the chapel.
Born Dec. 7, 1945, in Clayton, Iowa, the son of Ernest and Edith (Saylor) Fabert, Gary grew up working on the farms around Clayton, especially that of good friend Gordon Connell. He then joined the U.S. Army and served in the 8th Infantry in Bad Kreuznach, Germany.
On July 17, 1976, Gary married Teresa Zieser of Independence. They had one son. He worked for ADM Corn Sweeteners until his retirement in 1994.
Gary was well known for his sense of humor, cooking and gardening skills, and his love of animals. He will be greatly missed by the birds, wild turkeys, squirrels, deer and other wildlife that would visit his property daily.
He is survived by his wife, Teresa Fabert; son, Cory (Abby Nolan) Fabert of Fairfax; siblings, Boyd (Helen) Fabert of Guttenburg, Gene (Mary) Fabert of Independence, Mo., Faye Fabert of Prairie du Chien, Wis., Ron (Cindy) Fabert of Lee's Summit, Mo., Jackie Fabert of Kansas City, Mo., Zelda Wright of Garnavillo, Debbie (Jim) Morrison of Rockton, Ill., DuWayne (Rochelle) Fabert of Luana, Vee Beisker of Prairie du Chien and Rick (Brenda) Fabert of Prairie du Chien; along with numerous nieces and nephews; and the love of his life, granddaughter Allison.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Mark Saylor and Lyle Fabert.
