Pearl Lorraine Rusthoven, 87, of Independence, formerly of Washington, Iowa, died peacefully Tuesday, Aug. 19, 2014, at the ABCM Rehabilitation Center East Campus, Independence.
Pearl was born Nov. 10, 1926, in Chicago, the daughter of Bert and Grace (Boersema) Van Der Laan. She was a graduate of Chicago Christian High School. On June 20, 1947, she married Jacob Rusthoven in Chicago. Pearl worked for a few years as a gossip columnist for The Regional News in Palos Heights, Ill. In 1987, they moved to Washington, Iowa. Following the death of her husband in 2006, Pearl moved from Washington to Independence in 2009.
She was preceded in death by her parents; by her beloved husband, Jacob; and a brother, Clarence Van Der Laan.
She is survived by her children, Beverly (Wayne) Whitney of Blaine, Minn., Robert (Tracey) Rusthoven of Corona, Calif., Jack (Vicky) Rusthoven and Thomas Rusthoven of Braidwood, Ill.; 13 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; a brother, Dr. Cornelius Van Der Laan of Naples, Fla.; and a sister, Theresa McKenna of Oak Lawn, Ill.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 22, at Hope Wesleyan Church, Independence, with the Rev. Bob Solan officiating. Interment will be in Elm Grove Cemetery, Washington, Iowa. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Reiff Funeral Home & Crematory in Independence, and from 9 a.m. until services Friday at the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the elevator fund at Hope Wesleyan Church, 505 Fourth Ave. NE, Independence, IA 50644.
