UPDATE: Three Iowa tickets just miss huge Powerball jackpot

CLIVE - Powerball players in Iowa did not claim the $758.7 million jackpot, but Iowa Lottery officials said Thursday Iowans won more than 85,000 prizes in Wednesday's drawing - including three plays that were one number away from having a share of the jackpot and each won a $50,000 prize.

One ticket sold in Massachusetts matched the winning numbers - 6, 7, 16, 23 and 26, with a Powerball of 4 - to land the second-richest grand prize in the game's history, according to the Multi-State Lottery Association, which oversees the game for the 33 states and three participating U.S. territories.

A total of 85,440 plays purchased by Iowa Lottery players won prizes in the drawing ranging from $4 up to $50,000. Three tickets purchased in Iowa - at the Ampride All Round Truck Plaza, 3243 Fifth Ave. S. in Fort Dodge; Casey's, 502 Main St. in Dakota City; and Kwik Star, 100 W. Gilbert Drive in Evansdale - each won a $50,000 prize by matching four of the first five numbers and the Powerball.

Strong sales nationwide pushed Wednesday's jackpot to $758.7 million annuity, or $480.5 million lump-sum option. The latest Powerball jackpot trails only a $1.6 billion prize that was divided among winners in three states in January 2016.

The odds of winning the jackpot in Powerball are about 1 in 292.2 million. Lottery officials say about 54 percent of all the possible combinations were purchased in Wednesday's drawing.

Iowa Lottery players bought more than $4.7 million in Powerball tickets for Wednesday's drawing, including more than $3 million in tickets on Wednesday alone. During Wednesday's busiest stretch from about 5-6 p.m., Powerball tickets were selling at more than $7,800 per minute in Iowa. However, the average Iowa Powerball purchase on Wednesday remained less than $6, or 3 plays per ticket.
