Kathryn Ann Pfeffer, 69, of San Antonio, Texas, died April 20, 2016, of complications from Parkinson's/Lewy Body.
Kathy was born Nov. 6, 1946, in Charles City, Iowa, and graduated from high school in Postville, Iowa, in 1964. She obtained a bachelor's degree from San Francisco State University and a master of journalism degree from the University of Iowa. From 1977 to 1986, she was the editor of the Pioneer Herald in Mechanicsville, Iowa. She then worked in the printing department at the University of Iowa and later for the Press-Citizen newspaper in the Des Moines area. In 2005, she published a novel, "Peace in the Parsonage."
Kathy was a sweet, funny, adventurous, free spirt and a caring individual. She enjoyed writing, reading, playing duplicate bridge, camping, traveling and playing pranks. She especially liked being a "grammy" to her two grandsons.
Kathy is survived by her daughter, Michelle Waterman (Rodney Zimmerman, fiance); and grandson, Ryan Mart of Cedar Rapids; her son, Che (Lissette); and grandson, Nicolas Waterman of Burlingame, Calif.; her sister, Ruth E. (Eric) Ganes of Kenmare, N.D.; her brother, Pastor Paul (Karen) Pfeffer of Palatine, Ill.; her longtime companion and caregiver, Stan Broadwater of San Antonio, Texas; her niece, Natasha Ganes; and her three nephews, Wade (Melina) Ganes, Andrew (Cynthia) Pfeffer and Mark Pfeffer.
She is also survived by her former husband and father of her children, Ralph Waterman; and former husband, Kelvin Lehman.
She was predeceased by her parents, the Rev. Walter and Ida Pfeffer.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 9, at Zion Lutheran Church in Castalia with her brother, Pastor Paul Pfeffer, officiating. Visitation will begin at the church one hour before the services. Kathy donated her body to science to support disease study and the advancement of medical research, development and education.
